One of the eight limbs of ashtanga yoga is pranayama,
simply put, the art of breathing.
In Sanskrit, prana means energy or life force and yama means
control. Relaxed and controlled
breathing is important in yoga practice and everyday life. Oxygen composes much
of our bodies, since we are two thirds water - H2O. Poor oxygen supply affects all parts of
the body so it is important to breathe clean.
So when was the last time you changed your Air Conditioning filter? Cue horror flick scream. If you’re like me, you’ve forgotten there is even an air filter that needs to be replaced.
Just as there are many benefits to yoga and breathing quality air, there are many benefits to cleaning or replacing your filter including, lower energy bills, better health, less allergy or asthma aggravation, less energy waste/pollution and system longevity to name an important few.
Ideally, a filter should be changed out monthly. The process is fast and simple, once you’ve remembered. If you’re using a disposable filter, just slide it out and pop a new one in, or watch while your significant other does the quick but dirty work. If you’re looking to go “green” and save some green (money), investigate a permanent washable filter. An added benefit, when you finally do remember to tend to the task, you won’t need a trip to the store. Washable filters only require rinsing with water as the addition of anything else can cause debris to collect and lessen the filter effectiveness.
Before you close up the closet though, a few more steps could help your house smell like a fall festival. Essential oils are often used in yoga practice in final relaxation or meditation. Oils can have relaxing or breath enhancing properties. Soak an old piece of cloth with apple essential oil. Create a pocket or envelope from a larger piece of fabric. Place the initial sweet smelling swatch into the larger and add cinnamon sticks. Safety pin this to your filter. You’ve now got an all-natural, whole house freshener.
Air filter replacement can save you money in energy costs, medical bills and air conditioner repairs. Whether you have a disposable filter or a washable model, set a reminder for yourself to complete the quickest of your chores. The accomplishment may even inspire you to tackle a bigger task, like practicing that advanced yoga pose. Just breathe.
