Who knew baking soda was so rich with minerals, healed common health problems, had an exotic history and was all-natural?

I recently discovered the wonderful healing properties of baking soda when my daughter’s pediatrician recommended a baking soda bath. Braelyn, like many babies and children, suffers from severe eczema. Whether your baby is in the eczema club or not, I highly recommend a baking soda bath to alleviate skin rashes and irritations. (By they way, I sincerely hope you're Not a member of the club. Since being inducted, I’ve received no monthly delivery of erasers, stickers or pencils.)

Before we dive into the water, let’s dive into what baking soda is about. If you're like me, baking soda is synonymous with an orange Arm & Hammer box that resides in the back corners of refrigerators, and that's about it.  

The Origins of Baking Soda

Baking soda is Sodium Bicarbonate, a component of the mineral Natron.  The ancient Egyptians first used this naturally occurring substance found along the Nile River for mummification. Thankfully, you needn’t mine mineral deposits to reap the benefits of this multi-purpose product. Baking soda is cheap, safe, and likely readily available in your fridge or pantry. 

Why a Baking Soda Bath?

Baking soda easily dissolves, leaves no residues, has no scent, is very economical, and most important, effective. After our first week of baking soda baths, Braelyn’s skin looked less irritated and was noticeably softer.

In addition to calming eczema, a baking soda bath can help relieve constipation, the pain and irritation of diaper rash, bites/stings, soothe sunburns, or simply as a detox, to draw out toxins from the skin. To Alleviate the Symptoms of Eczema

Prepare a bath by pouring about ¼ cup of baking soda as warm water fills the tub.  Do not add or use soaps.  As a word of caution, be careful, adding too much can be drying.  In moderate amounts though, it will neutralize acids on the skin (similar to effects on heartburn) and soften.  This should be done once or twice per week. 

For all other ailments, use the same amount as symptoms occur, but do not exceed twice per week to avoid drying.

Baking soda is a simple and easy remedy for many common irritations in children. What are you waiting for? Come on in, the water’s fine!
